The spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) continues in Greece, with the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) reporting 12 additional outbreaks. No cases involving pigs have been recorded so far.

The new outbreaks have been identified in the regions of Pelopi, Lesvos, and Napis in the North Aegean area. This brings the total number of outbreaks in Greece to 17. A total of 3,909 animals (sheep, goats, and cattle) were at risk, with 282 confirmed cases as of the end of March.

Most of the new cases have been recorded on sheep farms and mixed farms (sheep/goats/cattle), where the number of infected animals ranges from isolated cases to several dozen within a single holding.

According to WOAH, the serotype detected in Greece is SAT-1, posing an additional challenge for disease control.

Experts note that despite the absence of infections in pigs, the situation is concerning for the entire livestock sector, as FMD is a highly contagious disease capable of spreading rapidly among different cloven-hoofed species.

The дальнейшая dynamics of the epizootic situation will depend on the effectiveness of quarantine and disease control measures aimed at containing the outbreaks and preventing further spread.
