The European Union has mobilised its strategic emergency reserve, rescEU, to support Cyprus in responding to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) detected in February. The assistance is aimed at containing the spread of the virus and strengthening disease control measures.

The mobilisation followed an official request from the Cypriot authorities via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The support package includes disinfectants, personal protective equipment, disposable coveralls, face masks, shoe covers, and other materials essential for containing the infection.

Cyprus has been working closely with the European Commission since the beginning of the outbreak. Previously, the EU provided more than 1 million vaccine doses from its vaccine bank and deployed three EU Veterinary Emergency Team missions, delivering on-site expertise and tailored recommendations.

In addition, European Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi visited Cyprus, reaffirming the EU’s full support in addressing the outbreak.
