The EU Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed unanimously approved Spain’s proposal for an updated ASF zoning system. Under this decision, Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food will develop a program regulating the movement of pigs and pork products within the designated zones, based on specific veterinary measures.
The new model includes two categories: Zone 1, a surveillance area where no ASF cases have been detected, and Zone 2, covering areas where outbreaks have been confirmed. Each zone will operate under its own set of requirements and restrictions.
The updated zoning replaces the previous scheme introduced after the first ASF case was detected in late November in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona), which established a 6-kilometer high-risk area and a 20-kilometer lower-risk zone with fencing and постоян monitoring. Unlike the earlier circular model, the new boundaries are defined according to administrative municipal borders and geographical features.
To date, 31 outbreaks and 162 dead wild boars have been recorded across seven municipalities: Cerdanyola del Vallès, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Sant Quirze del Vallès, Terrassa, Rubí, Molins de Rei, and Sant Feliu de Llobregat. All cases have occurred in wild animals, while pig farms remain free from the virus.
Against the backdrop of the epizootic situation, the regional pork market has shown a decline: in week 5 of the year, the price for class E carcasses stood at €1.285/kg, nearly 33% lower than in the same period last year and 26% below the five-year average.
