In the first nine months of 2026, Dutch piglet exports totalled 3,746,637 head, compared with 4,393,373 in the same period of 2025.
Spain remained the leading destination, importing 1,640,217 piglets. This was 22.5% fewer than in the first three quarters of last year, when shipments reached 2,117,014 head. Despite the decline, Spain accounted for 43.8% of total Dutch piglet exports.
Germany ranked second with 1,627,300 head, down 5.6% year on year. Together, Spain and Germany accounted for 87.2% of total Dutch piglet exports.
Belgium remained the third-largest market, receiving 290,235 piglets, 4.1% fewer than a year earlier.
The sharpest decline was recorded in trade with Romania, where exports fell by 88.3%, from 94,086 to 11,036 head. By contrast, shipments to Italy increased by 83.1% to 52,756 piglets.
Quarterly trends indicate that the pace of decline is gradually slowing. Exports were 19.7% lower year on year in the first quarter, 16.9% lower in the second quarter and just 6.5% lower in the third quarter.
Thus, Dutch piglet exports continue to decline in 2026, although the rate of contraction slowed somewhat in the second half of the year.
