Denmark’s largest meat producer aims to save around DKK 500 million amid intensifying competition, challenges in the beef market, and growing pressure on producer profitability.

Danish meat processing company Danish Crown has announced a major restructuring programme that will result in the reduction of approximately 800 white-collar positions over the next two to three years. The move was reported by Reuters, citing an official company statement.

According to Danish Crown, the restructuring is expected to generate savings of around DKK 500 million (approximately USD 78 million). Based on the company’s workforce as of September 2025, the planned reductions represent about 6% of total employees.

The decision comes against the backdrop of a challenging European meat market and the company’s efforts to improve efficiency and competitiveness. The beef business, in particular, has been facing significant pressure.

Last month, Danish Crown warned about intensifying competition for a shrinking cattle supply in both Denmark and Germany. A decline in cattle numbers across the region, combined with weaker market demand, has put considerable pressure on margins in the company’s beef operations.

Danish Crown CEO Niels Ulrich Duedahl said the company must adapt to changing market conditions.

“Competition in the global food market is intense, and our owners are facing challenging times due to the current quotation level,” he stated.

The announced job cuts form part of a broader transformation strategy aimed at strengthening Danish Crown’s competitiveness and reducing operating costs.

In recent months, the company has repeatedly highlighted the financial difficulties faced by its farmer-owners. Despite some improvement in competitiveness compared with other European producers, current pig and cattle prices remain insufficient to ensure sustainable profitability at farm level.

Industry analysts note that Danish Crown’s restructuring reflects broader trends across the European meat sector. The industry continues to operate under pressure from high production costs, declining livestock populations in several countries, increasing international competition, and shifting consumer demand patterns.

By streamlining operations and reducing costs, Danish Crown aims to maintain its position in the global market while supporting the long-term financial sustainability of both the company and its producer-owners.
