The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has extended the interim maximum zinc level of 3,000 mg/kg in starter pig feeds. The decision follows warnings from the pig and feed industries about potential difficulties if the limit were reduced to 300 mg/kg.

Canada’s new feed regulations established maximum permitted zinc levels in pig feeds. An interim limit of 3,000 mg/kg currently applies to starter feeds.

During consultations, CFIA indicated its intention to reduce this limit to 300 mg/kg to better align it with the standard nutritional requirements of pigs.

However, representatives of the pig and feed sectors said that such a level could create challenges when feeding young piglets.

After receiving additional information from the industry, CFIA decided to maintain the interim maximum of 3,000 mg/kg while the new data are further assessed and the most appropriate long-term approach is determined.

The agency will continue consultations with relevant industry associations. Producers will be given advance notice of any future changes to ensure they have sufficient time to prepare and adapt.
