The possibility of retaliatory action was outlined in a joint statement by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Brazilian side expressed concern over the EU decision and stressed that it expects the issue to be resolved through negotiations.
At the same time, the government warned that if consultations with the European side do not result in an outcome acceptable to Brazil, the country could resort to reciprocal restrictive measures.
The European Union introduced the restrictions because it requires guarantees that animal products entering the EU market comply with European rules on the use of antimicrobial medicinal products.
In particular, the rules prohibit the use of certain antimicrobial substances for growth promotion or to increase animal productivity.
Brazil is currently seeking to resolve the issue through diplomatic channels and secure a review of the EU decision.
