All pig farms located in the area designated by the European Union as affected by the African swine fever (ASF) outbreak in Catalonia have returned negative laboratory test results. This was reported by Spain’s Department of Agriculture.

Initially, the restriction zone included 39 pig farms within a 20-kilometre perimeter around the primary outbreak site. However, following the formal introduction of the regionalisation mechanism by the European Commission, the zone was expanded to include all municipalities officially classified as affected, not only farms within the 20-km radius. As a result, the total number of farms under control increased to 55.

As early as November 30, authorities confirmed that all 39 farms originally included in the restriction zone showed no signs of ASF infection. On December 10, it was reported that the remaining 16 farms added after the European Commission’s decision had also tested negative. Repeated testing at the initially affected farms continues to confirm the absence of the virus.

Twelve days have now passed since the official declaration of the outbreak, and the number of confirmed ASF cases remains unchanged at 13. All cases have been detected exclusively in wild boar and solely within the initially defined affected area. No new cases have been identified outside this zone.

Spain’s agricultural authorities note that this situation is a positive signal in terms of the primary objective — containing and confining the virus within the original outbreak perimeter. The absence of ASF on commercial pig farms significantly reduces risks for domestic production and creates favourable conditions for further negotiations with trading partners to maintain or restore exports under the principle of regionalisation.

At the same time, control measures, biosecurity protocols and monitoring of wild fauna in Catalonia remain intensified, as the coming weeks are considered critical for the final confirmation of the effectiveness of outbreak containment.
