The Netherlands had long withheld support for the agreement, which the EU concluded with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay last December after more than 25 years of negotiations. The hesitation stemmed in part from concerns about environmental standards and the potential impact on European agriculture.
However, the government stated that the economic benefits for the country outweigh the potential risks.
“At the moment, a large majority of member states appears to support the proposed arrangements,” the Dutch cabinet noted.
European countries are expected to vote on the agreement next month. If approved, it would become one of the EU’s most significant trade achievements in recent years, as the Mercosur market comprises more than 260 million consumers and is considered one of the key destinations for European exports.
