Rio de Janeiro recognized as free of classical swine fever

The state of Rio de Janeiro is recognized as a classical swine fever free zone by the OIE - World Organization for Animal Health. Classical swine fever (CSF) is a serious disease caused by a highly contagious virus that affects pigs and wild boars. In the State, the execution of these actions is the responsibility of the Department of Agricultural Defense of the Secretary of State for Agriculture.

Following the active surveillance activities in CSF-free zones, recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Supply, the Agricultural Defense technicians of the State Secretariat of Agriculture are conducting clinical and serological surveillance in both technical and non-technical swine farms. This involves taking blood samples from a percentage of animals over 8 months of age, to evaluate the possibility of CSF virus circulation. The samples are sent to laboratories accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture.

An estimated 50 farms in the state of Rio de Janeiro will participate in the survey, sampling more than 400 pigs. In addition to the farms where samples will be collected, another 10 farms will undergo clinical inspection of the animals.
