The average purchase price of live pigs has increased by 2.4% for two weeks in a row, according to analysts at the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders, citing the results of weekly monitoring.

The last trading day of May ended with an average increase in prices for slaughter pigs of 2.2 UAH/kg, bringing the average market price for the week to 93.5 UAH/kg. Most commercial batches were purchased at 93–97 UAH/kg, with the lowest prices recorded in the west and the highest prices mainly in the east.

Prices for chilled pork half-carcasses varied within a wider than usual range: while traditionally the difference between the minimum and maximum prices remained within 12–15 UAH/kg, it has now increased to 20 UAH/kg. Operators attribute this to both regional imbalances in supply and demand and attempts by some pork suppliers to reduce or avoid carryover stocks.

Meat processing representatives note a slowdown in final pork sales, explaining it by a significant increase in retail prices and the end of the holiday season. Some operators have faced cancellations of previously booked consignments, forcing them to postpone slaughter or end the week with carryover stocks and unscheduled warehouse stocks. In view of this, a number of buyers believe that prices may change direction at the upcoming auctions. At the same time, a number of operators note the extremely limited supply of live pigs of marketable condition and lower average animal weights, and therefore expect prices to stabilise and consolidate within a narrower price range. In addition, they note the parallel rise in chicken prices, which also serves as a supporting factor for quotations on the pork market.
