RENURE is an innovative type of fertiliser that allows part of chemical nutrients to be replaced with a more environmentally friendly alternative. Under the proposal, Member States that choose to adopt the measure will be authorised to allow RENURE use beyond the current limits set by the Nitrates Directive for manure and processed manure application.
According to the European Commission, this approach will help reduce farmers’ costs, strengthen the EU agricultural sector’s strategic autonomy, and at the same time ensure the protection of the environment and water resources.
The agreement will now be submitted to the European Parliament and the Council for a three-month scrutiny period. If no objections are raised, the Commission will be able to formally adopt the amendment to the Nitrates Directive. Importantly, the changes will only take effect in those Member States that choose to authorise RENURE and transpose its provisions into their national legislation.
Thus, the EU is taking a step towards more environmentally friendly and economically efficient agriculture, meeting both the needs of farmers and the high standards of environmental protection.
