EU agri-food trade: Pigmeat exports down 19% in January

While pigmeat remains the EU's fourth-strongest export sector, exports decreased in January.

The total value of EU agri-food trade reached a value of €28.3 billion in January 2022, a 25% increase compared to the same period last year and a 16% increase on the three-year average. Exports reached €15.8 billion, while imports were valued at €12.5 billion, representing increases of 16% and 38% respectively.

While pigmeat remains the fourth-strongest export sector, pigmeat exports in January 2022 decreased by 19% (-€233 million) compared to last year to reach €996 million.

The EU’s top export category was cereal preparations & milling products. In January 2022, this sector increased its export value by €203 million.

Regarding imports, the value of oilseed & protein crop imports stood at over €1.7 billion in January 2022. These products accounted for 14% of all agri-food imports in 2021.

Prior to the Russian invasion, agri-food imports from Ukraine had grown by 88% year on year in January 2022 to reach a value of €1 billion. This was mainly driven by imports of cereals, which grew by €258 million (136%).
