The training brought together representatives of local government authorities, village and settlement heads, professionals working in the social and education sectors, civil society organisations, and other specialists who work directly with local residents.
Over the course of two days, participants discussed the causes of antimicrobial resistance, the consequences of improper antibiotic use, and the role of communities in promoting a responsible approach to animal treatment. Particular attention was paid to the importance of consulting a veterinarian, following the prescribed treatment regimen, and preventing the unauthorised use of veterinary medicines.
During the practical sessions, participants worked through real-life situations, learned how to explain complex issues in clear and accessible language, and selected effective communication formats for different audiences. Interactive exercises and teamwork helped them develop approaches that can be used when conducting outreach activities with animal owners in their communities.
The training sessions were held under the “Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control” (EpiC) project, funded by the U.S. Department of State. The initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between professionals working in human and animal health and to support the implementation of the One Health approach in Ukraine.
The next training sessions for representatives of territorial communities will take place in Kropyvnytskyi on July 23–24. Participants will continue to develop practical skills in risk communication and the dissemination of reliable information on responsible antibiotic use at the local level.
