Cyprus has reported three cases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in domestic animals — two in sheep and one in cattle. All outbreaks were recorded in the Larnaca region. These are the first cases of the disease in the country since 2007.

Cyprus notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) of the detection of the FMD virus. According to the official report, one outbreak in cattle was registered on February 19, while two cases in domestic sheep were confirmed on February 20. All three outbreaks are located in the Larnaca district.

Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals and can cause significant economic losses to the livestock sector due to trade restrictions and the need to implement strict quarantine measures.

The confirmed cases are the first reported in Cyprus since 2007, which may indicate renewed epizootic risks for the region. The competent authorities are expected to take measures to contain the outbreaks and prevent further spread of the disease.
