Azerbaijan opens market for Brazilian poultry and pork

Brazilian meat products are gaining new opportunities in the international market as Azerbaijan has officially opened its borders to imports of thermo-processed poultry and pork. The news was announced by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), which noted that Azerbaijani health authorities made the decision following negotiations with Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, and his team.

Poultry consumption in Azerbaijan currently stands at about 15 kg per capita, with total domestic demand reaching 141,000 tons in 2021. Projections suggest this figure could rise to 152,000 tons by 2026. Last year, the country imported 41,900 tons of poultry—46% more than in 2023—with Ukraine and Russia as the main suppliers.

Brazil has historically played a significant role in supplying chicken to Azerbaijan, but exports were suspended in 2019 and only resumed briefly in 2024. As for pork, despite its relatively low consumption in the country, Brazilian shipments have accounted for the majority of imports in recent years.

The opening of the market for thermo-processed products creates conditions for Brazil to re-establish a stronger presence in Azerbaijan. Producers expect a gradual increase in exports, tailored to local requirements and growing demand.

ABPA President Ricardo Santin stressed the importance of this development:

“Brazil is globally recognized for the quality and safety of its products, which meet the strictest international standards. This new opening strengthens our position as a strategic partner of Azerbaijan at a time of consistent growth in local demand.”

This step not only expands the geographical reach of Brazilian exports but also consolidates Brazil’s position in a region with a growing appetite for animal protein. For Azerbaijan, it provides access to high-quality, safe products that align with global food market trends.
