March 2026 has become one of the most intense months in terms of African swine fever (ASF) spread in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. According to official data, 73 infected wild boar carcasses have been detected during this period alone, indicating a significant rise in infection pressure in the region.

According to the TSIS database, the highest number of cases was recorded in the districts of Siegen-Wittgenstein (41 cases) and Olpe (28), while 4 infected animals were found in Hochsauerlandkreis. Particular concern surrounds the latter district, where the virus was first detected only in February, suggesting further geographical spread of the infection.

The current figures are close to the peak recorded in August 2025 (74 cases) and significantly exceed the levels seen earlier in 2026: 23 cases were reported in January and 32 in February. Importantly, no cases of ASF have been detected in domestic pigs in the region so far.

At present, North Rhine-Westphalia remains the only German federal state experiencing high infection pressure. In other regions, the situation has stabilised: in Hesse, monthly cases have not exceeded 20 since August 2025, with only 3 cases reported in March. In Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg, where the last outbreaks occurred in mid-2025, authorities are considering declaring the regions ASF-free later this year.

A similar situation is observed in Brandenburg, where ASF was first detected in Germany: the last infected wild boar there was found in May 2025. Under current rules, a region can be declared ASF-free one year after the last confirmed case.

At the same time, African swine fever remains one of the key threats to Ukraine’s pig industry. Given the constant risk of virus introduction and its circulation in wild fauna, strengthening biosecurity and raising awareness among producers is critically important.

To address this challenge, the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders, together with leading industry experts, has developed an online course titled “African Swine Fever — Everything Business Needs to Know,” available on the AgriAcademy platform. The training programme covers all key aspects of ASF control, from virus transmission mechanisms to modern approaches in diagnostics and biosecurity.

The course consists of five modules and combines theoretical knowledge with practical assignments to reinforce learning. Participants gain skills in risk assessment, disease prevention, and farm preparedness for potential outbreaks. Upon successful completion, participants receive a certificate.

The course is free of charge.
