During the last but one week of summer, the pig prices ranged from 47.5 to 50 UAH/kg. The average market price of the beginning of the second decade has escalated to 48.8 UAH/kg, which is 3.6% higher than a week earlier. So, the expectations of pork producers were fulfilled, regarding the revival of prices before the long holiday weekend. According to the results of the bargaining at the end of the previous week, pig producers sold their commodity lots at 1−2.5 UAH/kg higher price. In addition to the seasonally restricted supply of slaughter pigs, the forced exit of one of the largest enterprises in the West of the country («Halychyna-Zahid», which was affected by the ASF) was also significant. As a result, operators from the western regions are forced to look for new contractors in the central part of the country.
It also increases competition among the pig producers and so, according to processors, will serve as a price support factor for several weeks.
Most meat processors are preparing for the shift in prices next week towards the upper limit of this week’s range. Thus, the survey results from the Meat Industry Association indicate that the majority of buyers intend to keep the next week's prices within the limits of 48−50 UAH/kg. Meat processors, on the other hand, believe that the prices will not be able to stay at this level for more than a couple weeks. With the high pork prices on the Ukrainian market and weakening of sales, expected next week, the import is going to compensate for the pork shortages.
