Drought weather conditions, which Europe has faced this year, may persist for at least three more months and affect Ukraine. This is the subject of an EU report.

«In the coming months, by November, conditions are likely to be warmer and drier than usual in the western European-Mediterranean region, particularly in Spain and Portugal,» the report said.

It is noted that about half of the 27 EU countries were threatened by drought, the deterioration of weather conditions is recorded in Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania and Spain.

At the same time there is a growing danger of drought in Europe outside the EU — in Britain, Serbia, Ukraine and Moldova.

The authors of the report stated that the lack of precipitation and a number of heat waves since May caused drought conditions and reduced water levels in rivers. This, in turn, has affected the energy sector in many European countries, depriving hydroelectric power plants of their main source of energy and other power plants of their sources of coolant.

Water shortages and drought also reduced European crop yields, with corn, soybeans and sunflowers the hardest hit. Rainfall in August helped some regions, but in others crops suffered from thunderstorms.
