Yesterday, 27 November 2024, the first online session on key issues of biosecurity and antimicrobial resistance in pig production took place. The event brought together industry experts, farm owners, veterinarians and scientists to discuss best practices, standards and strategies to improve the efficiency and safety of pork production.

Oksana Yurchenko, President of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders, presented the industry's biosafety standard, which takes into account both Ukrainian and international experience:

‘For several years now, we have been visiting industrial pig farms together with experts and providing practical biosecurity recommendations. In particular, we have created a questionnaire that allows producers to check the biosecurity level of their farms and receive an individual plan of recommendations. Now we are ready to share our considerable experience, which has become the basis for a new project - an industry standard for biosecurity. During these online sessions, we will discuss this document, and later we will make it public.’

One of the keynote presentations was made by Vitaliy Bashynsky, an international expert on biosecurity in livestock and food safety, who focused on the key aspects of disease prevention in pig production through the implementation of high biosecurity standards. He noted that high-quality biosecurity not only reduces the risk of infection, but is also an economically viable strategy for every producer.

Oleksandr Revnivtsev, an expert in the field of productive animal health, shared practical advice on reducing the dependence on antibiotics in livestock production. In his presentation, he emphasised the importance of producers' awareness of antimicrobial resistance and presented global trends in managing this problem.

Particular attention was paid to the practical experience of raising pigs without the use of antibiotics. Thomas Bruner, owner of the Ukrainian company Agro Plus 2006, shared his story. He explained how they manage to maintain high productivity without the use of antibiotics and highlighted the challenges they face: ensuring a high level of biosecurity, feed quality and constant work on disease prevention.

The session was the beginning of a series of events aimed at developing modern pig production in Ukraine. The next discussion will include a detailed look at the restrictions and regulatory framework for the use of antibiotics, transport biosecurity measures and practical tips on disinfection. Join the next online session on 4 December.

The training is organised by the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as part of the joint project ‘Keeping Animals Healthy in Ukraine’.
