Spain's meat industry is the country's leading agri-food sector

At the European level, Spanish livestock production is one of the most important. In 2020, it reached nearly 11 million tons with the pork sector being of particular importance.

In Spain, the meat industry, with 3,554 companies located mainly in rural areas, generates a turnover of 31.7 billion euros, representing 25% of the Spanish food sector, and 2.5% of the GDP. It directly employs 110,413 workers, i.e. 25% of the total employment in the Spanish food industry.

In 2021, Spanish exports of meat and meat products totaled 8.8 billion euros, (an increase of 4.4% over the previous year); accounting for 14.6% of total Spanish agri-food exports.

At the European level, livestock production in Spain is one of the most important. In 2020, it reached nearly 11 million tons, with the pork sector accounting for 42% of final livestock production, followed by poultry meat production. Figures which, at the Community level, place Spain in first place for sheep meat production (with 27% of total production), second in pig meat (almost 22% of total production); second, also, in poultry meat (13%), preceded by Poland and third in beef (10%) after Germany and France.
