In terms of controlling the spread of some swine diseases, wildlife plays a key role. For example, when it comes to African swine fever (ASF). In 2014, for example, ASF outbreaks were recorded exclusively in wildlife.

Due to the war, hunting is banned in Ukraine and a large part of the hunting grounds are mined. This means that with limited control measures, the population of wild pigs increases, which can lead to the spread and circulation of various diseases.

Therefore, the focus of the project of the Association of Ukranian Pig Breeders (AUPB) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is to assess the risks of the spread of pig diseases in wildlife. To this end, a survey will be conducted in each region of Ukraine with hunting grounds of different forms of ownership: public and private.

"As an organisation, we are mainly concerned with the industrial sector, but we understand the importance of wildlife in assessing pig disease control. Therefore, in partnership with experts, the competent authority and organisations representing the hunting segment, we will collect information to assess the role of wildlife in the epizootic situation in the country," commented the industry association.

The Association of Ukranian Pig Breeders is a non-profit, voluntary organization founded by domestic pork producers. The main objectives of the association are to represent and protect the rights and interests of the association farms, to promote the development and implementation of new technologies for the efficient production of pork, the expansion of markets, and protection of domestic markets.
