According to the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, the ASF epidemiological situation remains tense: 54 cases of ASF were reported in Ukraine in the first nine months of 2024, which is 15% higher than in the whole of 2023.
Given this, as well as the consequences of the disease for the industry, it is important to develop an industry standard for biosafety and a response plan in case of confirmation of a disease that has not yet been recorded in Ukraine.
Thus, within the framework of the project ‘Keeping Animals Healthy in Ukraine’, representatives of the domestic pig industry, the competent authority and international partners are working to implement best biosecurity practices to prevent the spread of the ASF pathogen.
Work is also underway to develop a response plan for diseases that have not yet been recorded in Ukraine, which will strengthen control over the epizootic situation in Ukraine. For business, an expanded range of veterinary research, support in improving biosafety, and veterinary support for enterprises are provided.
It is worth reminding that the project ‘Ensuring Animal Health in Ukraine’ is being implemented by the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders (AUPB) since October 2022.
