Prices for pork on supermarket shelves continued to rise in October, according to the results of price monitoring in national retail chains by the analytical department of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders.

In October, the average retail price of a kilo of chilled pork was 207.9 UAH/kg. This is 2.2% or 4.4 UAH/kg higher than a month earlier, according to analysts of the association:

‘In October, the average price for chilled pork semi-finished products reached the highest level of the previous year, which was recorded in September 2023. However, if then the main driver for the rise in the price of pork in retail was the increase in the purchase price of live pork, this year the situation is different: the average price on the live market in October was 31% lower than last September. This is due to changes at other stages of the pricing chain. In particular, the price level for chilled pork half-carcasses is higher than last year at the corresponding purchase prices. This is partly due to the need for slaughterhouses to compensate for the decline in prices for pig by-products (hides, fat, offal), which are in higher supply this year, while demand is much weaker.’

‘The main ‘price blow’ in the rise in price is borne by premium parts - tenderloin, loin, steak, and neck. On the other hand, this year, in contrast to 2023, the difference between the prices of chicken fillet and pork, on the contrary, has decreased, and non-premium parts (shoulder, thigh, brisket, etc.) have become even more affordable,’ the AUPB analysts inform.
