The Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders (AUPB) has presented the Sectoral Biosafety Standard for pig farms. The document was developed with the support of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is aimed at increasing the level of protection of animals from diseases, in particular African swine fever (ASF).

What does the standard provide for?

The industry biosafety standard defines a set of measures to prevent the penetration and spread of infections at pig farms. It includes:

  • requirements for the sanitation of transport and personnel;
  • control over feeding and water supply;
  • restrictions on visitors and animal movement;
  • requirements for the quarantine zone and measures in the event of a disease outbreak.

Why is it important?

In recent years, Ukraine has repeatedly faced outbreaks of ASF, which have caused major losses to the industry. The introduction of a unified biosafety standard will help companies minimise risks and create a more secure production system.
