The global situation with ASF remains challenging: the disease continues to cause economic losses, and the risks of the virus spreading are not diminishing. However, today pig producers have more knowledge than ever before to effectively counter this threat. An online course on combating ASF, organised by the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders in cooperation with leading FAO experts in the field, has shown that old approaches no longer work - we need to act in a comprehensive manner, taking into account new scientific research and international experience.

As part of the online course ‘African swine fever - everything business needs to know’, experts analysed the current threats to the industry and how to overcome them.

Virus variability and difficulty of early diagnosis

Scientists have identified features of the current strain of the ASF virus that make it difficult to detect. In particular, the virus has low contagiousness, which means it spreads slowly among livestock. This means that an outbreak can go undetected for a long time.

Another challenge is the lack of characteristic symptoms. In many cases, pigs can die without any obvious signs of the disease, which makes it difficult to respond quickly.

Risk factors that are underestimated

During the course, participants received detailed information about atypical ways of spreading the virus, which are often overlooked. In particular, research shows that:

  • In 47% of cases in China, the virus was found on staff clothing and footwear.
  • The virus can be transmitted through food, especially in the absence of heat treatment.
  • Insects, in particular the autumn moth, can be mechanical vectors of the infection.

Lack of an effective vaccine

Despite numerous developments, there is still no reliable vaccine against ASF. The use of live attenuated viruses raises many safety issues, and their impact on the spread of the disease requires additional research.

Opportunities and ways to overcome threats

The course experts confirmed that effective biosecurity remains the best way to prevent ASF outbreaks. Key measures include:

  • Enhanced control over the movement of transport and personnel.
  • Regular laboratory monitoring of animal health.
  • Heat treatment of feed to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Installation of protective barriers against insects and rodents.

In addition, the main problem in the fight against the disease is the lack of sufficient knowledge of prevention and response methods on many farms. Regular training, exchange of experience and implementation of best practices can significantly reduce the risks for producers. The main task of enterprises is the systematic implementation of biosecurity measures, timely diagnostics and staff development.

Therefore, registration for the online course remains open on the AgriAcademy digital learning platform. For more information on training and methods of combating ASF, please follow the link: https://courses.agriacademy.org/courses/course-v1:FAO+ASF+2024Q4/about
