The European Commission has proposed 25% counter-tariffs on a range of American goods in response to US tariffs on European steel and aluminum. The news was reported by Reuters, citing a document seen by journalists.

According to the document, some of the new tariffs will take effect on May 16, while others are set to be implemented on December 1 this year. The list of targeted goods is quite broad and includes diamonds, dental floss, sausages, nuts, and soybeans.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič stated that the total value of the goods affected by the new tariffs will be lower than the previously announced €26 billion (approximately $28.45 billion).

At the same time, certain products initially considered for inclusion in the list have been removed. Specifically, the European Commission decided not to impose tariffs on bourbon, wine, and dairy products. This move likely stems from former US President Donald Trump’s warning that, if the EU were to apply a 50% tariff on bourbon, the US would respond with a 200% tariff on European alcoholic beverages.

This latest move by the EU is part of a broader trade dispute between the two economic powers, which has been ongoing for several years and periodically flares up in the form of tariff wars.

The European Commission is now awaiting discussions with EU member states, after which the proposed measures may be formally approved.
