Domestic pig breeding: Top 5 industry indicators

The results of the year are a good basis for making plans for the next year. The analytical department of the Association of Ukranian Pig Breeders has prepared TOP-5 final indicators of the state of pig production.

≈400 pig farms

Operators in 10 regions of Ukraine have felt the impact of the war. Although fewer pig farms were affected by the occupation, proximity to the war zones and the destruction associated with it, but about four hundred pig producers in the first month of the war faced a breakdown of the supply chains of critical production resources (feed, veterinary drugs, etc.), problems with the movement of animals between complexes and to slaughter, lack of staff due to evacuation.

22,000 sows

These are the preliminary estimates of the loss of commercial breeding stock. According to the preliminary estimations due to the direct military operations and/or risks of further management the industrial pig breeding sector lost not less than a tenth part of the "starting" number of sows in 2022. In turn, the dynamics of the total number of pigs in the last few months indicates that the total number of pigs in the country will reach the five million mark or even lower as early as the beginning of 2023.

+26,3%

It is by this percentage that the average purchase price of pigs in slaughter condition is higher than in the previous year (excluding VAT). Thus, under the influence of lower domestic supply, global and national inflation trends, last year it reached 48 UAH/kg, which is more than a quarter or 10 UAH/kg higher than in 2021.

47 thousand tons

That is how much imported pork entered the domestic market in 2022. The tax preferences for importers, shortage of domestic supply of pork and as a consequence, higher prices for the purchase period fuelled the interest of domestic meat processors to cheaper imported raw materials. However, in the last two months the activity of importers significantly decreased both as compared with October and with November-December 2021: 1.8 thousand tons in November

every 5th

In conditions of war, the vast majority of operators have gone into "standby mode" and are not ready to make forward-looking development plans. Thus, a survey of 115 key players in the market (the total headcount of about 2.5 million heads) indicates that 80% of the respondents choose to work as usual. At the same time, every fifth enterprise either voices development plans or is already implementing projects aimed at increasing the production potential of enterprises through the development, renovation or renewal of livestock. However, it is too early to speak about the full compensation for the losses of domestic pig breeding because of the war.
