In contrast to the prices of pigs in slaughter conditions, quotes in the market of market piglets over the past couple of months have not changed the direction of the movement. According to the market operators, the supply of such animals remains fairly limited, while demand remains at a stably high level, which supports the positive price dynamics. For example, in the second half of July the price for piglets weighing 25-30 kg was 90-130 UAH/kg, and for those weighing 9-12 kg - 190-200 UAH/kg.
Suppliers of fattening piglets say that the demand for marketable piglets is active both on the part of agricultural producers, who are trying to reduce losses because of cheapening of grain, and the population. Thus, agrarians specializing in crop production are trying to compensate some of the money lost due to the lack of exports by feeding grain to pigs, because the price of piglets is much more attractive this year. Considering that at present most consignments of commercial piglets are "booked" until the end of September and in some places until October inclusive, demand from "situational pig farmers" often remains unsatisfied.
"The cancellation of the list of critical imports from July generally allowed the import from abroad not only purebred pigs, but also market pigs, including piglets for fattening. However, summer is an unfavorable period for such purchases due to hot weather conditions. Among the economic barriers to such transactions is a significant increase in logistics costs, the rising cost of such purchases due to the abolition of tax incentives for imports and the revision of the official exchange rate," commented the analytical department of the Association "Pig Breeders of Ukraine".
