Biological Safety is Always Important

Viral diseases and bacteria pose a major threat to the global pig and poultry industry, as they not only cause suffering to infected animals, but also lead to large economic losses for farmers.

A team of researchers from the National Veterinary Institute of Denmark installed mosquito nets in twenty broiler houses in Denmark. Measures to combat the penetration of flies into broiler houses significantly reduced the number of broiler patients with campylobacteriosis from 51.4% to 15.4%.

Studies have also shown that flies can transmit viruses such as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), porcine epizootic diarrhea virus (PED) and African swine fever (ASF) when flies bite pigs or pigs eat flies.

For example, the most common route of transmission among pigs is direct contact between healthy and sick animals or indirect transmission through contaminated feed, water, vehicles, clothing, etc. However, in some disease outbreaks, the source of infection remains unclear, as even farms that follow strict biosecurity measures are affected by the infection.
