An outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) has been confirmed at a commercial pig farm near the village of Roscani in the Anenii Noi district of Moldova. Laboratory tests detected the virus in samples collected from pigs. According to the National Food Safety Agency, the farm houses approximately 65,000 pigs.

In response, the Anenii Noi Emergency Commission convened urgently and approved measures to contain and eliminate the outbreak, preventing further spread of the disease. Official notifications about the ASF outbreak have been sent to the relevant authorities in Moldova, the European Union, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), and other international partners.

The agency noted that pig owners and commercial farms affected by ASF may receive compensation based on the market price of the animals at the time of culling, considering their age, weight, and genetic value.

Authorities are urging pig farmers to immediately report any cases of illness or death in animals, as well as any wild boar carcasses found, to local veterinary services. Additionally, pig owners are advised not to feed food waste to pigs and to strictly adhere to biosecurity measures.

Citizens are also warned against bringing pork products from neighboring countries into Moldova, as such products will be confiscated and destroyed.

Since the beginning of 2025, approximately 30 ASF outbreaks have been reported in Moldova, mostly among domestic pigs. While ASF poses no threat to humans, it has severe economic consequences, potentially leading to pork supply disruptions and financial losses for the livestock industry.
