African swine fever (ASF) and classical swine fever (CSF) continue to spread across Asia. Malaysia has confirmed a third case of ASF in Selangor state, while Japan has recorded its first CSF outbreak since October 2024.

ASF Outbreak in Malaysia

Three pig farms in Selangor have tested positive for ASF, leading to the culling of 920 pigs. In total, around 2,220 animals have been affected across two farms in Sepang district and one in Kuala Langat.

These are the first ASF cases ever detected in Selangor, with authorities attributing the infection source to other states where previous outbreaks were recorded, including Penang, Perak, and Sarawak.

Following a sudden increase in pig mortality in January, veterinary authorities inspected 29 farms in the region and confirmed ASF at three locations. Farmers have been urged to strengthen biosecurity measures.

ASF Cases in Vietnam and the Philippines

Vietnam has reported its first ASF cases of 2025 in Ca Mau province, located in the Mekong Delta region.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, the government has begun compensating farmers affected by ASF. The first payments will be made to 54 hog owners in Negros Oriental province, with each receiving PHP5,000 ($90) per culled pig, up to a maximum of PHP100,000 ($1,800).

Classical Swine Fever in Japan

Japan has confirmed a new CSF outbreak at a farm in Maebashi city, Gunma prefecture. After several piglets showed symptoms, authorities tested the herd and confirmed the presence of the virus. All 5,529 pigs on the farm were culled.

Gunma is one of Japan’s 46 prefectures where CSF vaccination is mandatory. Movement restrictions are now in place within a 3-kilometer radius of the affected farm to prevent further spread.

Since 2018, Japan has recorded 95 CSF outbreaks on farms, leading to the culling of over 131,200 domestic pigs. Additionally, 3,152 wild boars have tested positive for the virus.

Despite similar names and impacts, CSF and ASF are caused by different viruses. Japan has never reported an ASF outbreak.

ASF in Europe

Since the start of 2025, 89 ASF outbreaks have been confirmed in six European countries:

  • Romania – 48 cases
  • Moldova – 18
  • Ukraine – 9
  • Serbia – 8
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina – 5
  • Italy – 1

The disease also continues to spread among wild boars, with 15 EU countries confirming 414 new ASF cases in just one week. The highest numbers were reported in Poland (157 cases) and Germany (118).

Experts emphasize the need for enhanced biosecurity measures as ASF and CSF continue to cause severe economic losses in the global pig industry.
