A series of online sessions organised by the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders with the support of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently brought together pig industry professionals from different parts of Ukraine. The event was aimed at raising awareness of biosecurity, reducing the risks of antibiotic resistance and sharing best international practices on farms.

The sessions discussed key aspects of biosecurity, including proper disinfection of transport, use of sanitary checkpoints, control of the spread of pathogens and rational use of antibiotics. Particular attention was paid to practical recommendations for the implementation of the industry biosafety standard, which is designed to establish a biosafety system and minimise the risk of infection at enterprises.

The kick-off session focused on the general principles of biosafety. The participants discussed methods of effectively protecting farms from the spread of infections, including through staff training and the proper organisation of sanitary zones.

The second session focused on transport sanitation and disinfection. Experts, including Vitaliy Sokolov, presented practical recommendations on how to prevent the transfer of pathogens through vehicles, emphasising the importance of the correct use of disinfection barriers and the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The final session, held on 11 December, was dedicated to the rational use of antibiotics in pig production. Experts emphasised the importance of optimising treatment measures and developing alternative approaches to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.

The series of online sessions has made an important contribution to raising awareness among Ukrainian pig producers, contributing to the implementation of best practices in the industry. Through these events, producers were introduced to international best practices and specific tools for improvement.

The organisers emphasised that the event provided a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience, and contributed to the implementation of effective working methods in the pig industry. Participants expressed their hope for continuation of such initiatives in the future.
