African swine fever continues to spread across several regions of the world. In Europe, new outbreaks in domestic pigs have been confirmed in Hungary, Poland, Romania and Moldova, while the number of cases in wild boar since the beginning of the year has exceeded 6,200. At the same time, new outbreaks are being reported in Kenya, Tanzania, India and the Philippines, while Indonesia is trying to rebuild its pig sector after years of losses caused by ASF.

Hungarian veterinary authorities have confirmed three additional ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs, bringing the country’s total number of such cases this year to four.

Hungary recorded its first outbreak in domestic pigs at the beginning of June, while the virus has been circulating among wild boar in several regions of the country for a number of years.

According to reports submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), all three new outbreaks were confirmed after 9 August.

The first involved a farm with 1,850 pigs in Somogy County in the south-west of the country, around 10 km from the Croatian border. The two subsequent cases were detected in much smaller herds in neighbouring Baranya County.

Poland, Romania and Moldova Also Report New Outbreaks

In Poland, the number of ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs in 2026 has risen to five.

The two latest cases were detected on farms with 17 and 231 pigs. They are located in West Pomeranian Voivodeship in the north-west of the country and Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship in north-central Poland, respectively.

Romania reported 21 new outbreaks to WOAH over the past week, while Moldova reported two.

Both Moldovan cases were recorded in backyard holdings in Gagauzia in the south of the country.

In Romania, the new outbreaks were spread across seven counties. One occurred on a farm in the south of the country with almost 3,200 pigs. Other cases reported in August mainly involved small backyard holdings with between one and 17 pigs.

Europe Has Already Recorded 618 Outbreaks in Domestic Pigs

Bulgaria recently became the twelfth country in the region to report ASF in domestic pigs in 2026.

According to the European Commission’s Animal Disease Information System, as of 12 August the total number of outbreaks in domestic pigs since the beginning of the year had reached 618.

By comparison, 940 outbreaks were recorded in 13 countries during the whole of 2025.

Between 6 and 12 August alone, five countries reported 39 new outbreaks, 32 of which occurred in Romania.

Romania has recorded the highest number of outbreaks in domestic pigs in 2026, with 242 cases. It is followed by Serbia with 194 and Croatia with 130.

More Than 6,200 Cases in Wild Boar

The situation in wildlife also remains challenging.

As of 12 August, the European Commission system had recorded 6,264 ASF outbreaks in wild boar across 18 countries.

Another 113 new cases from 12 countries were added to the database during the previous seven days.

The highest numbers of new outbreaks during that period were reported in:

  • Italy — 34;
  • Poland — 22;
  • Hungary — 16.

Since the beginning of 2026, Poland has recorded the highest number of cases in wild boar, at 1,575. Italy follows with 1,045 and Lithuania with 848.

Finland Expands Restricted Zone

At the end of July, Finland confirmed ASF for the first time in its history.

Since then, according to WOAH data, the number of outbreaks in wild boar in the country has risen to 13.

Positive results were obtained from testing bones and carcasses of wild boar piglets found in two groups approximately 5 km apart in Virolahti, the country’s south-easternmost municipality.

Following the new cases, the Finnish Food Authority expanded the core restricted zone by another 7 km northwards along the Russian border.

Within this zone, people and vehicles may travel only on roads, while berry and mushroom picking is temporarily prohibited.

ASF Reaches Bologna Province in Italy

In Italy, an infected wild boar has been confirmed for the first time in the Bologna area.

Bologna has become the fifth province in the Emilia-Romagna region to record ASF in the wild boar population.

New cases in wild boar also continue to be detected in Liguria, Piedmont and Tuscany.

Kenya Faces Its Most Serious ASF Outbreak

In East Africa, the situation is particularly serious in Kenya.

According to local media reports, around 1,470 pigs have died or were close to death on 20 farms in Kiambu County since mid-May.

Some farms lost their entire herds. The current outbreak has been described as the most serious in the country’s history.

Kiambu is located in south-central Kenya near the capital, Nairobi. ASF cases were also recorded in the county during the second half of 2025.

At the end of June, the virus was confirmed at two additional sites around 30 km apart. According to WOAH, this marked the re-emergence of the disease after an absence of almost ten months.

A total of 194 pigs were directly affected, including 34 animals at the International Livestock Research Institute and 160 on a farm in Kajiado County.

Possible sources of spread included swill feeding, illegal movement of animals and contaminated objects or equipment.

Tanzania also reported one outbreak to WOAH, which occurred in April near the capital, Dodoma. Around 1,420 domestic pigs were affected.

India Tightens Restrictions on Pig Movements

In the Indian state of Meghalaya, farmers’ organisations are also trying to contain the spread of ASF.

In West Khasi Hills district, association representatives met with producers and agreed to push for a ban on imports of live pigs from other districts, particularly from areas where ASF has already been reported.

The organisation is also calling for mandatory testing of pigs before slaughter and government support for farms affected by outbreaks.

ASF Active in 12 Regions of the Philippines

In the Philippines, according to Bureau of Animal Industry data as of 7 August, active ASF outbreaks were reported in 65 communities across 12 regions on the islands of Luzon, Mindanao and the Visayas.

The previous report, dated 24 July, listed 11 affected regions.

The Negros Island Region has been hit hardest, with active cases recorded in 19 communities.

Compared with the previous report, the disease has re-emerged in Cagayan Valley on Luzon, as well as in the Davao and Soccsksargen regions on Mindanao.

At the same time, authorities report that the situation has been brought under control in Central and Eastern Visayas.

In two provinces and cities in the Negros region, authorities introduced price controls on live pigs and pork to support fair trade amid the latest wave of the disease.

Indonesia Tries to Rebuild the Sector After Years of Losses

ASF was first detected in Indonesia in 2019, but its impact on the country’s pig sector is still being felt.

According to an industry representative, the country has lost potential production of around 4 million pigs annually since then.

To rebuild the herd, increase pork production and improve the genetic potential of the domestic pig population, Indonesia recently received around 550 breeding pigs from Denmark.

ASF therefore remains one of the major global challenges facing the pig sector. The simultaneous emergence of new outbreaks in domestic pigs and wild boar across Europe, Asia and Africa demonstrates that even countries with long-standing control programmes remain vulnerable to reintroduction and further spread of the virus.
