The impact of the second quarantine on pork market — AUPB

In response to the second wave of coronavirus, countries are re-introducing full quarantine. If the same events are waiting for Ukraine, how can it affect the meat market is analyzed by analysts of Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders .

1. The closure of food markets will force the consumer to refocus on retail chains and specialized butcher stores. Therefore, no problems are expected with the sale of live meat at slaughterhouses, which supply meat to such retailers. As in the last time, the situation will be more difficult for those operators whose products find consumers on the shelves of markets, as the work of the latter may again be limited.

2. Demand for pork from catering establishments will slightly decrease. However, not as much as in spring, as most of them have already been able to reorient themselves to work with delivery and / or take away.

3.The boom of consumer activity through a panic mood, most likely, will no longer be true. Firstly, the population of the country is no longer so «shocking» to take the duty of force majeure, based on the experience of spring quarantine. Secondly, autumn is a season of traditional relaxation of demand, in particular due to «no picnic» weather and restructuring of family budgets with the beginning of the heating season. Therefore, a surge in consumer activity by mid-December, when citizens will gradually prepare for winter holidays, is unlikely. Until then, the demand will remain relatively stable.

4. Taking into account the growth in the number of patients with SOVID-19, we do not rule out the increase in personnel problems for the meat industry enterprises in comparison with spring. However, taking into account the greater readiness of the sector for such challenges and increased control over the health of personnel at enterprises, the overall situation with slaughtering and processing of pork is unlikely to be affected.

«Now we are not talking about the reintroduction of quarantine, so the key factors affecting the situation in the pork market are seasonal consumer trends, as well as the ratio of demand for pork meat processing plants with its supply, both internal and external,» — added in AUPB.
