Water Consumption Wisely — Hog Slat

Individual water consumption of pigs ranges from nearly 2 liters per day for weaners to nearly 38 liters per day for a lactating sow.

In order to ensure that the livestock receive the proper amount of water, it is important to provide a continuous supply of fresh drinking water at a flow rate appropriate for a particular stage of production.

For most water nipple designs, the recommended water pressure should be between 1.4 and 2.8 bar. Both water pressure and nipple orifice size can be adjusted to achieve the target water flow rate.

The flow rate can easily be checked by measuring the time it takes to fill a dish of a known volume, such as an empty water bottle or a cup. Make it a rule of thumb to randomly check at least 10% of the total number of installed nipples once a week.

Flush your drinking lines regularly to remove organic or mineral buildup, as over time this can reduce the available pipe area for water flow and potentially reduce water quality and/or flow rate.
