USDA and AUPB Continue to Support Pork Producers in War Times

Since the beginning of January 2024, the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders (AUPB) have been implementing the second phase of the Animal Health in Ukraine project, aimed at supporting pork producers in the area of epizootic welfare.

"Even before the war, the issue of epizootic well-being was one of the main issues for the pig industry, as it directly affects its investment attractiveness, the ability to export products and, in general, to carry out production activities. Of course, a full-scale war could not but affect the control of the epizootic situation, so when we planned the project concept, we really focused on what the industry needed. During the first stage, we managed to find out the impact of the war on pig production in the industrial and household sectors, market players' awareness of African swine fever (ASF) and antibiotic resistance, and the level of biosecurity of pig farms and households. We also focused on direct assistance: 20 enterprises located in the de-occupied and close to the hostilities received comprehensive laboratory tests for a year; 10 farms became participants in the biosafety audit program; everyone had the opportunity to join an online school for veterinary specialists in the field of pig production, organized in partnership with the University of Iowa. However, given that there are still a number of tasks to be solved, both the US Department of Agriculture and the USBA decided to continue the project and continue to support domestic pig producers in the face of war," the  Association of Ukrainian Pig Breedersn commented.

As part of the second phase, which will be implemented in 2024, USDA and the ASU will expand the laboratory testing program, in particular, 50 enterprises will be able to test feed raw materials for mycotoxins. Biosafety audits of pig farms remain an important component of the activity, given the increasing frequency of ASF cases in Ukraine. A number of trainings are also planned for pork producers, including on the rational use of antimicrobial agents.

Currently, the USBA is compiling a list of companies that will be able to receive the above support. Therefore, if you want to become a participant in the project, please contact us for more information:
