For the first time in the last ten months, the commercial pig herd in Ukraine recovered significantly. This was reported by analysts of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders referencing the State Statistics Service of Ukraine data.

Thus, the number of commercial pigs in Ukraine amounted to 3,55 million heads as of September 1. The number increased by 3.1% or 107 thousand heads year-on-year.

“Of course, since the beginning of the year the number of pigs in agricultural enterprises was growing, but until September the increase was insufficient to match the last year’s number of commercial pigs. Is was partially due to seasonal fluctuations of pig number in the industry.

Therefore, we can see the gradual implementation of the plans to increase the production capacity announced by pig farmers at the beginning of the year, despite the peculiar market circumstances this year. In particular, the current stock is comparable to the early August last year, that is, even before the sector lost almost 3% of pigs due to an outbreak of ASF in late summer,” – say analysts of the Association.

Olexandra Bondarska, head of the analytical department of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders will sum up the performance of the industry during January-September 2020 and outlook for recent future during the XII International Congress “Profitable Pig Production”.
