In spite of wartime force majeure, domestic producers are working to improve production and economic performance. Such conclusions were reached by analysts of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders according to the results of the annual benchmarking study.

In 2022 domestic pig farms not only returned to the planned work, but also continued to search for ways to improve efficiency. In particular, participation in the benchmarking* of hog farms allowed operators to adjust their own production plans taking into account their own achievements and the achievements of their colleagues.

«At the end of 2021, certain operators set a high bar for safety, average daily gains and fattening conversions, as well as the marketability of production. In particular, the average number of weaned piglets per sow per year according to the results of 2021 amounted to 27.7 heads against 26.8 heads a year ago (+3.4%), and the average number of animals sold per sow per year increased to 24.1 heads. (+1.2%)»,the analysts of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders commented.

16 enterprises-respondents which keep 47 thousand sows or about 21% of the industrial breeding stock joined the annual comparison according to the results of 2021. «Unfortunately, not all permanent participants were able to join the study last year, several because of occupation or proximity to war zones,» the industry association noted.

«However, proactive industry operators, regardless of size or materiality of progress compared to peers or previous periods, are eager to use this tool to synchronize individual development with industry vectors. Therefore, in April 2023 a new round of the survey will start, which both traditional participants and new respondents will be able to join», AUPB states.
