New EU Rules on Gene Editing Could Help Solve Global Food Crisis

New rules proposed by the European Commission to regulate new genomic technologies (NGTs) in agriculture have the potential to help solve the global food crisis, said Syngenta Group CEO Eric Firwald.

"Climate change, geopolitical conflict and rising input prices have put farmers large and small under intense pressure to increase production and efficiency while reducing their environmental footprint," Firwald said. "Gene editing has the potential to help farmers do this by providing them with access to new crop varieties that are more resistant to weather, pests and disease, as well as have a longer shelf life and better flavor."

"Gene editing is a powerful tool that can help farmers solve the global food crisis," said Firwald. "We urge the European Commission to adopt new rules on gene editing that will allow farmers to use this technology to develop new crop varieties that are needed to ensure food security for all."

Gene editing is a controversial technology, and some people are concerned about potential health and environmental risks. However, scientific studies have shown that gene editing is a safe and effective way to develop new crop varieties.

"Gene editing is a safe and effective technology that has the potential to help farmers solve the global food crisis," said Firwald. "We call on the European Commission to adopt new rules on gene editing that will allow farmers to use this technology to develop new crop varieties that are needed to ensure food security for all."
