Moldovan farmers are demanding a ban on imports of wheat, corn, sunflower seeds, and rapeseed from Ukraine by the end of this week. This is stated in the appeal of the association Forța Fermierilor, addressed to the government of Moldova, APK-Inform reported citing NOI.md.

According to Forța Fermierilor, which unites Moldovan producers of grains and oilseeds, the losses of agrarians from the ban have already reached at least 2 billion MDL. In particular, the price for 1 kg of wheat in Moldova has dropped to 2.8 lei, while the cost of its production is about 5 lei. The price of sunflower seeds fell even more sharply by 3.5-4 lei per kilogram. In this regard, the association states that most small and medium-sized farmers in Moldova are already on the verge of bankruptcy.

"Forța Fermierilor demands that the government adopt a decision this week on a temporary ban, similar to the EU, on imports of wheat, corn, sunflower and rapeseed from Ukraine. At the same time, we insist that the government finds the funds to compensate farmers for the losses caused by the catastrophic decline in agricultural prices as soon as possible, as well as to fulfill other promises made to farmers. Otherwise, it is likely that soon the whole of Moldova will be covered by farmers' protests," the appeal emphasizes.
