The country's pork production this year is seen to decrease by 50,000 metric tons because of the African swine fever, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said.

The USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) lowered its earlier forecast of 975,000 MT to 925,000 MT.

"FAS Manila lowered 2023 pork production in response to ASF's continued spread into new provinces within the Central and Western Visayas region, including Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Aklan," the USDA said.

Central Visayas was the country's top swine producer in 2022. Western Visayas was third.

The Philippine Statistics Authority pegged the country's total swine inventory from January to March this year at 10.18 million, 4.2 percent higher compared with last year's 9.77 million.
